It seems that the American people have a nasty habit of wasting food. It is so easy to get, so artificially cheap, and abundant that we don't think twice about throwing away food. I think about the food I waste and the people who go hungry. I try to buy what I know I will use and cook only enough that there will not be waste. Leftovers for lunch, vegetable scraps for making stock, there are a lot of ways that we can reduce the waste.
In a world where there are more people to feed and less land to supply all the hungry mouths, it seems like a smart thing to do.
Jonathon Bloom is writing a book about how we waste food. He also blogs about it .
Here is a wonderful blog by a midwestern homemaker , full of suggestions for being thrifty and keeping a lovely home.
And some Recipes for using up leftover things and extras.
Thanks for thinking about this and maybe finding ways to have less waste in your kitchen.
