The Center for Ecoliteracy is one of my favorite resources on the design of sustainable communites that respect the biosphere in which we must live. According to Fritjof Capra, we must develop an approach to society and lifestyle that incorporates system thinking - an awareness of the relationships that exist and that we are not living sustainably if we do not recognize this interconnectedness.
CEL publishes regularly and makes their resources available on-line. Taking Back Our Food by Miguel A. Altieri, Professor of agrocecology at the University of California, Berkeley, is an excellent essay on the current state of our global food supply. He discusses food production, the effect it has had on communities around the world, and the challenges that are quickly becoming very real. It is a wonderful article that I encourage you to read.
