Howdy folks, Here's an update on the new wines stocked at the Near West Side store.  All of these wines have been brought in since the beginning of May and they are all (in my opinion) delicious.  Our goal here is to find you those bottles that have exceptionally good value no matter what the price point.  Here are our newest finds, by category:

Organics:
Culpeo Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc (Chilean, $9.99 Once again I broke my personal rule about "critter wines"--look for the fox on the label.)
Chateau Laubarit ($12.99 Classically styled white Bordeaux that's affordable and organic!)

Holstein grazing at Kenny's
For three years Bloomingfoods has been selling Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese, and this past month I was fortunate to visit their farm and cheese making operation. Kenny and his wife greeted me with warm smiles and enthusiasm about their cheese.

I received a personal tour of their land and facility. Kenny drove me around through the 200 acres of rolling green hills. I got close to and personal with their herd of 100 pure bred Holsteins. Along with a very clean facility were many healthy cows and 5 new calves that Kenny helped birth 3 days prior. (See the several pictures I have attached, below.)

Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese personally ships their product nationwide, yet they have one vat, one cheese making room and under 10 staff members. Raw milk cheese is their specialty and it is made with vegetable-based rennet.

ImageHi, everyone.

We're delighted to announce the arrival in the East Store cheese dept. of a great new product..."Cheese Paper."  Finally, cheese storage is made simple! Formaticum produces cheese paper specifically designed to keep cheese fresh and delicious. Two-ply cheese paper simulates the cheese cave environment. It’s time to start treating cheese like any other highly perishable product – and that means proper handling and storage. There is a common misconception that cheese can last for long periods of time. Not true! Most cheese has a finite shelf life.

Only whole wheels of cheese are aged. Once a wheel is cut into retail-sized pieces, the cheese is much more delicate and susceptible to rapid deterioration. This is when proper handling and storage can mean the difference between eating vibrant and delicious cheese or dead and rotten cheese.

ImageCambozola Blue Bree is a luscious triple cream cow's milk cheese. It is made in Bavaria, Germany, and its name is a tribute to a 4th century Bavarian settlement called Cambodunum. Its very mild flavor more resembles a camembert than it does a typical blue, making it a great entry point for people feeling squeamish about blues.

Kennys Farmhouse Cheese Kentucky Rose is a light cheese, with heavy butter and cream notes up front, middle notes of pecan, and finishes with a citrus kind of snap.
