Friends of Lake Monroe was founded in 2016 to protect and enhance Lake Monroe and its watershed. Lake Monroe is the sole source of drinking water for Bloomington and Monroe County. In the last three years, Friends of Lake Monroe has conducted extensive water quality sampling, developed a watershed management plan for the lake, educated residents about the importance of septic system maintenance, and launched a cost-share program to promote soil and water conservation practices.
The funds raised by this month's Positive Change program will help them further educate the public about the top threats to Lake Monroe (sediment, nutrients, and bacteria), empower community members to protect water quality and encourage conservation practices on farms and forestland in the watershed. Protecting Lake Monroe is vital for ensuring the health of our community on many levels. Clean, reliable drinking water is a requirement for the survival of our community, both on the individual consumer level and also as a valuable resource in food production. Lake Monroe is a key component of the interconnections between the environment, our health, and our food. Together, we can improve the quality of water in Lake Monroe for years to come.
